I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a Bachelors in Architecture in 2018. During my adolescence I watched my sister go through this very same program + it caught my interest. Architecture was a balanced mix of art and science, it was what I wanted to do.
Going through the actual program, I learned why architecture is considered one of the hardest across all majors in college. The hypercompetitive environment mixed with the all-nighter work ethic that was encouraged molded a lot of how I work to this day. Despite being told by a professor to quit during my first quarter, I made it through the program with a degree, a job, and a future.
Working full time was a completely different experience, no longer was I making creative design decisions to address specific conditions and dabbling in the engineering aspects that went into my projects at university. I was doing things to save money, and babysitting engineers / contractors to make sure they played well together. However, the heavy workload was still there, it was taking a toll on my mental health, and it wasn’t even paying well. I quit with no intention of coming back, and eventually found myself in a UX Design bootcamp from DesignLab after another architecture expatriate recommended that I look into it.
Going through the course and speaking to people within the industry has opened my eyes to what I want to do. A lot of the skills transfer over creatively, technologically, and socially. I’m still designing how people interact with their environment (but digitally), I’m using a lot of the same programs and techniques (I do miss the command prompt style of Autodesk software), and I’m still going to be working with people who actually will end up building my designs (but not having different engineers fighting for the space within the walls). There is an extremely large overlap within UX Design and Architecture, and even moreso in the future as digital interfaces start to creep more and more into our three dimensional lives.
As for who I am outside of my background in design. I was born + raised in Norwalk, California the youngest of six in a first generation Filipino immigrant family. I went to my first Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament in 2004, and have no intention of ever stopping (I play Yoshi/Fox on a Frame1, but I’ve been dabbling in Sheik on a regular controller lately). I love learning and trying new things, getting to an above average level (recently it was bowling), and then moving onto the next one. I love listening to sad girls playing a guitar/piano. I have a lot of shoes (Jordan 1’s and Dunks mostly) and keyboards (currently on a GMMK Pro with Holy Pandas).
